Epson 0x97: What It Really Means (and the Hard Truth)

Error 0x97 is the one Epson error you don't want to see. Epson's own screen message just tells you to turn the printer off and back on again — which tells you nothing. Here's what's actually going on, the one fix worth trying, and the honest read on whether your printer is done.

What 0x97 means

Error 0x97 is Epson's code for an internal hardware failure — most commonly the mainboard or the printhead assembly. It's especially common on WorkForce models. This isn't a jam, a driver problem, or a low-ink warning. It's the printer's internals reporting that something inside has failed. That's the bad news out of the way — now the fix.

The one fix worth trying

  1. 1Power the printer off.
  2. 2Unplug it from the wall (not just the printer — the wall) and wait at least 5–10 minutes. This is a real discharge wait, not a 10-second unplug.
  3. 3While it's unplugged, open the printer and check for paper jams or foreign objects — a scrap of paper or a dislodged label can occasionally trigger it. Remove anything you find.
  4. 4Plug it back in and power it on.

Sometimes — occasionally — the printer comes up clean and never shows 0x97 again. That's your best-case outcome, and it's the only user-level fix that exists.

The honest verdict

If 0x97 comes back after the power cycle…

Your printer is dead at consumer level. There is no user-level fix beyond this point — no button sequence, no driver reinstall, no cleaning cycle will bring back a failed mainboard or printhead assembly. Epson's own documentation routes you to contact Epson support for service. If the printer is under warranty, do that. If it isn't, service on a mainboard or head assembly will almost always cost more than a replacement printer, so shopping for a new one is the rational move. We're not going to pretend otherwise.

Don't confuse 0x97 with these

Epson printers show several other codes that sound scary but are very different animals:
